Poly Adirondack Chair
There are many styles of poly Adirondack Chairs on the market today. This style of chair originated in the area of Westport NY near the Adirondack Mountains in NY. Some say the design was to enable folks to set the chair on the hillside and to sit fairly upright while enjoying the view looking down the mountains. The defining characteristics are the wide armrests, slanted seat, and a tall back. The backs, seats, and armrests are reported to have been made from single wide boards that were free from knots. This design dates back to 1903 and the reported inventor of the chair is Thomas Lee. He lived in Massachusetts and had a summer home in Westport NY. He spent three years developing what he considered to be the perfect chair. Lee was already a wealthy man and gave the design to his hunting friend named Harry Bunnell. Harry was struggling as his woodworking business was not doing very well. He took Lee’s design made some changes and patented the Westport Chair. Harry did well and built these chairs for the next twenty years. This was the predecessor to the modern Adirondack Chair.
